iron.ic

in a society that promotes liberty and freedom and that allows its civilians to own arms, a different culture exists on the playgrounds. paranoia and fear shroud parents today and prohibit their children to play with toy guns, or with other children who own such toys.

in a washington post article i read today, the reporter recounted several instances of children being charged for terrorist threats, or suspended from school, because they possessed such "violent weapons".

  • In New Jersey, an 8-year-old boy used an L-shaped piece of paper in a game of cops and robbers during recess. School officials called the police, saying the child had threatened "to kill other students" by saying "pow pow" on the playground.

  • In Texas, a 13-year-old girl was suspended and transferred to a school for problem kids after she brought a butter knife to school with her lunch. Her parents had packed the dull knife so that she could cut her apple to make it easier to eat because she wore braces.

  • In Arkansas, an 8-year-old boy was punished for pointing a cooked chicken strip at another student and saying "pow, pow, pow."

It's absurdity really, but who can blame them for their fears when their country is constantly rubbing off wrongly with nations. We should just label all things sword or gunlike as weapons of mass destruction.

    xin nian kuai le!

the potluck at the reynolds had a turn up of almost 50 people - our largest SSA yet! it was a feast - mee goreng, chicken rice, vegetable curry, dumplings, sardine puffs, teriyaki chicken, pineapple tarts etc. etc. i'd have taken pictures of the food had my camera battery not been flat, so all i have are photos from facebook.

i played a game of texas holdem and won 3bucks in half an hour (we each started off with $2.50, so thats a 20% return in 30min wowee). haha. *correction: it should be 120%. this is why im not concentrating in finance.

    cupidity

i dont really have anything to say about valentine's day, but i thought 'cupidity' was funny/interesting so i thought i'd post anyway.

chocolates and candy from cheryl and core group molly and steph. dinner with the IRC at the rotunda. somehow with less excitement than last year. the food didn't seem that great either. arts and crafts and little mermaid. a surprise for mun and red velvet cake. not first without - skyslush, being ten min late to a class in which the prof already hates me, awkward people relations and confrontations, bad quiz, and a long school day.

a kiss for cherie for being too-too special! happy birthday!

    precious, precocious

dad asks "what do you want to be when you grow up, kid?"
kid replies "i dont know dad. what do you want to be when you grow up?"

    *

kid runs over to dad and asks dad to help him with his numbers. kid holds out his two hands and says, "test me on my numbers up to ten!"
dad says "whats 2 plus 6?"
kid replies, staring at his fingers, "8!"
    dad says "what's 8 plus 2?"
    kid answers "10!"
    dad says "what's 10 plus 2?"
kid stares really hard at his hands and says with a frown "i can't answer that..."
    dad says "why not?"
kid says "i'd need to have twelve fingers."

    anthropologie

i love it. it's so weird and twisted and bizarre and intriguing.

and therein lies the beauty of it all.

it isnt adulterous to unite the sperm and egg of a man and woman who are married but not to each other.
it is acceptable to commodify child birth and children.

Kay and Michael are married and want to have a child. Michael's sperm fertilizes Kay's egg, and the fertilized egg is then placed in Rachel, Michael's sister, for gestation. Is this incest?

Flora and her first husband had 5 children. She later on remarried to a younger man and wanted to bear him a child. Unable to do so naturally, she asks her daughter from her first marriage to provide her eggs to be united with Flora's second husband's sperm. The fertilization process was successful and they harvested 45 fertilized eggs. Who is the mother? Flora is at the same time the child's mother and grandmother, while Flora's daughter is both the child's sister and mother. What happens when Flora passes away, and there are all these fertilized eggs sitting in the incubator?

If a lesbian couple has a child born by (of course) one of the partners, and the couple decides to split up, can the other "mother" claim custody of the child?

In attempt to create ties to both lesbian partners, some of the methods they use to achieve conception include:
    - taking the egg from one partner and gestating it in the other
    - using the sperm from one partner's brother, or other male relative
    - the other partner taking part in the insemination process

And, if a male donates his sperm to many people and remains anonymous, what happens when two of his "children" get married?

    the big apple

good friends, good food. good times.

arrived in new york thursday night/friday morning after a 6half hour bus ride. starlight express was pretty good - free bagels, coffee and chocolate on the bus, and even a clean bathroom too. wowee, it rocks compared to greyhound. but anyway, i digress.

i got in so late that cherie and auntie were both asleep already. oops! we went for supper across the road at some korean restaurant and had fried dumplings on the house (cos i wanted to eat some but it came in 11s and i didnt want to eat so many, so i asked if i cld share it with the waiter haha), noodle soup and more dumplings in beef broth.

breakfast at the hotel consisted of a toasted cinnamon raisin bagel, tea, and 10 pieces of cornflakes for which i got scolded by the breakfast man because it was after ten o'clock.

headed to greenwich with the goal of finding magnolia, the pretty pretty cupcake bakery. cherie and auntie got caught up shopping and we never really made it their. had lunch at au bon pain - 2 kinds of soup: wild mushroom soup and broccoli cheddar, with rosemary breadsticks; chicken caesar salad; 2 rice bowls. i was stufffffeeeedd.

after more shopping and a random make-over thingy at bloomingdales, we searched for a bakery/restaurant that the sales manager at some store had recommended us to go. butternut squash soup, ham and smoked mozzarella sandwich with arugula and pesto, and an apple almond tart. i picked at it (well not really, i ate a considerable amount) because i was meeting chris for dinner.

dinner was at penang (singaporean food, hoorah!). had roti chenai, chicken rice, braised pork with yam and chinchow. i reckon nonya was better, but oh well, anything is better than nothing.

then we went on a hunt for magnolia. it was SO difficult to find. i learnt that you can send a text message to 'google' and it will text u back with the search details. coolness! went back to chris', split a red velvet cupcake, and then went back to the hotel with 4 more in hand.

day two, cherie went shopping and so i decided to hang around by myself. had another cupcake for lunch, did a little bit of reading and then took a nap. finally headed out to ICP to catch cartier-bresson's exhibit. unfortunately i didn't have much time because i took so long to get out of the hotel and had to rush through his photographs. what a waste.

met up with mich and we went to the city bakery where they were having a hot chocolate festival. we shared a caramel hot chocolate with home-made marshmallows and a chocolate lemon tart. ooh. yumminess and sinfulness but such goodness.

after tea was dinner (haha all i did was eat! gosh!). had planned to go to the pearl oyster bar but changed our minds and had dinner at A.O.C. instead. on the table were mussels in white wine broth, a bread basket with vinegar and olive oil and escargos with garlic and basil. i ordered a salad with filo pastry and goat cheese served on spinach, which was nothing like i expected it to be, and hence stared at it for a good minute trying to figure out what it was when it was served.

post dinner was at coldstone creamery, and then magnolia (again, since cherie hadnt been there). i got myself a banana pudding which was oh-so-delicious. like everything else i had been eating.

got up late on sunday. had one and a half cupcakes and a slice of toast for breakfast. then had lunch with uncle's business partner at lily's. charsiew horfun, shrimp horfun, 3 types of roast meat, sushi, sashimi, dumplings, fried rice, lo mein, charsiew wanton mee... and more. it was a day of rude waiters - at lily's, at serendipity, and at the place where we eventually had dessert. serendipity was a pretty place, and the frozen hot chocolate looked so good, but the waiter was rude (and gay, according to uncle wally), and i had to catch the bus, so we gave it a miss.

i dont remember the name of the last place we went to, but we had caramel apple pie with tahitian vanilla icecream, warm vahlrona chocolate cake with a liquid center and a creme brulee cheesecake. "not really just" keep on eating. haha.

it was great seeing cherie again. and her parents were really generous and more than took care of me. i came back with a huge box of chuqianyiding mee, milo, curry paste, fishballs, mantou and more. i think i have enough food for a month!
